Five Bells isn't a bad book. But it's not a very satisfying one either. Jones' novel is inspired by the 1939 Kenneth Slessor poem of the same.

Stockmen, gangsters and a belligerent writer all gather to the fray, as the investigation becomes embroiled with a much darker conspiracy. Another character, Pei Xing, is a sixty year old Chinese migrant. Boat Harbour Beach is one of the most beautiful on the island. Had Five Bells a more commercial story structure along with the gorgeous prose I wouldn't hesitate in recommending it but I think its rather pretentious literary bent limits its appeal.
